I had never given much thought as to why teaching English in Martin was used as a church outreach tool. The school president, Bohdan, explained to us that traditional US outreach methods don’t work here. Parents don’t generally see the value of sending their unchurched children to a vacation bible school or backyard bible club.
But Martin is sort of the intellectual capital of Slovakia and parents highly value education. Even though English is taught in school, parents are eager for their children to be as fluent as possible. So while we don’t share the plan of salvation every night, we hopefully provide a positive interaction with the church that will lead to more contact, and a changed life, in the future.
