Today was our first day of school – and all the feelings associated with that were present! Many of our students were nervous and shy – especially during the assessment process – but by the end of the day they were settled in their classrooms and having a great time. (The same could be said for our teachers and coaches, as well!) It was fun to hear laughter pouring out of the classrooms by the end of the day.
The energy level on the part of teachers and coaches was awesome to see. The students picked up on the fact that the teachers were very glad to be there and extremely happy to have each of them there, as well. One of my favorite things about the day was seeing so many familiar faces!! Some of these students have been with us for three years now. So cool to see the excitement on their faces as they would see an “American” friend. Based on how today went, I have a feeling there’ll be many more American friends before our two weeks are up.
For me personally, there was one very special familiar face. One of “our girls” (the young women who do such an amazing, selfless job caring for us during our stay) from last year came all the way from Bratislava just to see us. Susan is a dear young woman who loves Jesus very much and is so special to us. She could only stay from Sunday pm to Monday at 2pm, but she wanted to be sure to see us while we were here in Slovakia. It was so great to see her. When she had to leave, we didn’t say good-bye but, instead, said “see you later” – to try to avoid any tears.
Based on what I saw today, I think there’ll be many more “see you later’s” when our two weeks are up – for the very same reason…
