Last day…

…which means the tears have begun.  As I type this, I can hear the laughter and applause coming from the classrooms as the students thank their teachers – and the teachers return the favor. The appreciation shown by the students is quite overwhelming. Gifts, tears, speeches, hugs, kisses – it all happens on the last day.

It always feels like two weeks is such a short amount of time to accomplish anything. We’re often asked the question “How in the world do you teach any English in just two weeks?” And, to a certain extent, it’s a valid question – if that were our only purpose in coming here.  (Actually, if you could hear the English being spoken now and could compare it to two weeks ago, you’d be quite amazed.)  The greater accomplishment, and purpose though, is in the relationships that are built between the students and the teachers. They’ll last long beyond our two weeks in Martin. Thanks to technology and email, blogs and facebook, the relationships can continue throughout the year and, judging by the tears, even beyond that.

Until next year, Martin, Slovakia.  We’ll miss you – and look forward to being with you again…
