Each year, in preparation for our time in Slovakia, the Serving Slovakia team reads a book together. This year we read and studied Ruthless: Knowing the God Who Fights for You by Bo Stern. It’s one of those books that packs a whole bunch of eye-opening spiritual truth in a deceptively small and simple package. The overall theme of the book is this: when battles come our way – and they will come – it’s not just important, but essential, to know the character of the One Who is always fighting for us. And Bo, and her family, are living out this truth every day. (To read more of Bo’s story, click here)
I was reminded of that today as a few of us took a little trip with the President of the CCE, Bohdan Hrobon, to look at the building which will house the new classrooms for the high school students at the Lutheran Academy. As you can see from the pictures, there’s a lot of work to be done before these classrooms will be ready for class in the fall. Even more challenging is the amount of money that will be needed to do so. In addition, as Bohdan shared with us, this is just a temporary solution for a long-term, ongoing challenge that’s faced each year as the school grows: where will the next year’s class be housed?
(Please keep in mind – even with the less-than-ideal facilities and yearly uncertainties, more students than they could possibly handle apply to attend this school because of it’s strong academic performance and caring staff that goes above and beyond to show Christ’s love to their students.)
We could feel and share his frustration and deep desire to come up with a permanent fix. As I stood there, looking at the crumbling walls and torn up floors, I found myself thinking how much I wished I had a magic wand I could wave to get them the money and facilities needed. Before I even completed that thought, another popped into my head. “Really, Shelly? A magic wand?? You have something so much more powerful and amazing at your disposal 24-7. You can pray to the God Who Fights for You AND your friends at the CCE. There’s nothing that can beat that power.”
So, I invite you to pray with me. God is doing an amazing work here in Martin, Slovakia and I believe to the very core of my soul that He will provide what is needed to accomplish what He’s set out to do here. As Bo states in her book, God has been to every minute we will ever face, and He’s placed provisions for us. We won’t see them now, but they’ll be there when we get there. I believe that’s true for me. I absolutely believe it’s true for my friends here in Martin.
And I believe God ‘s provision is waiting for them.
“See, the former things have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce them to you.” Isaiah 42:9
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are Mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” Isaiah 43:1
“In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.” Psalm 5:3
